FFwD: Mussels and Chorizo

I was so looking forward to this dish, I mean mussels, chorizo, garlic, wine, tomatoes...what is there not to like!?! I spent half an hour debearding and scrubbing the mussels, had the sauce bubbling nicely away and the bread freshly out of the oven. Put the mussels in the sauce, covered and waited.

Sauce bubbling nicely!

After being covered for about 10 minutes
After about 5 minutes, I checked, the mussels didn't really look open, so back on the cover for about 5 more minutes. At this point, it is past dinner time (running a bit late today!), so off came the cover and into bowls everything goes. If you notice, the mussels still aren't really open. Started to pry into them and realized about 75% of the mussels are still half-raw. My husband, the consummate supporter, thought long and hard about diving in anyway, but since neither of us knew if raw mussels or half cooked mussels were OK to eat, everything got scrapped. I realized I had put the wine in too early, so there was not enough steam to cook them, if I had left them in for a bit longer, probably would have been fine. Oh, well, lesson learned.

Ended up eating the bread with some pepperoni, cheese, wine, and a nice salad. It was funny, but having that simple dinner ended up being very French like for us since reminded me of the time my husband and I were on the French side of St. Maarten on our honeymoon and the last time I was in Paris. It turned out to be a really nice dinner anyway!

  1. Oh no! So sorry to hear that. Ours took a little longer than the recipe originally called for, but I credited that to having too many mussels in the pot...
Hopefully, next week's works out better for you.

  2. Bummer! It does sound like you had a perfect meal anyhow, that is one of my favorite things to do at home. Something about it just feels like a vacation. Hope you get to try these again!

  3. Sorry to hear you had trouble with the mussels, but you did the right thing by not touching
them. As I said in our blog, hubby was very sick from mussels and it's not a nice
experience. I do love your "other" dinner, reminds me of our many trips driving
through parts of France and picnicking with all the goodies we purchased along the
    way.

  4. Sorry to hear that, but better safe than sorry when it comes to mussels so I think you made the right decision. Better luck next time. This whole project has been such a learning experience for me.

  5. How disappointing that it didn't work out. I really enjoyed this recipe, so I hope you have a chance to try it again. Bread and pepperoni sounds pretty good too.

  6. Oh no! You'll have to try this again some time - it's such a good recipe. It's frustrating when things don't turn out, but better to scrap the meal than to eat raw mussels.
