FFwD: Olive Oil Ice Cream

Since I flaked on last weeks recipe, I really wanted to do this weeks and that went double because it was Olive Oil Ice Cream! That really intrigued me. I don't have an ice cream maker, so I googled it and found the process to make it without an ice cream maker! A bit more time consuming, but well worth it! The recipe calls for a fruity olive oil, I was pretty sure my olive oil was a bit too peppery and my search for an infused olive oil turned up empty at the grocery store, so I infused my own. I used lemon peel and vanilla bean, it was so easy!

As the oil was cooling, I put together the cream mixture, tempered the eggs, and whisked away.

Once everything was the appropriate consistency, it all went into a ice bath to cool down in preparation for the freezer!

Once everything was cool, the bowl went into the freezer. Every 30-40 minutes, I took the bowl out and mixed it vigorously, breaking up the ice crystals. Here is what it looked like after about 2-3 hours:

It was really good, rich, complex and super satisfying! I already have some ideas of additions and adaptations! We had it for dessert the other night and every night since. I totally forgot to take a nice presentation picture, so here is the bowl with quite a bit eaten!

Yummy!

  1. Yours looks beautiful and creamy and you didn't have a machine do it for you! Great job! I also love that you made your own fruity olive oil. So glad it was a hit with your family. It certainly was with mine.

  4. Way to go for doing it without a machine. I am hanging onto my borrowed machine for as long as I can because I think I might be obsessed with making ice cream now!!

  8. This looks amazing ! Between not having an ice cream machine and infusing your own oil- you get extra credit points for sure :) Both Nana and I were pleasantly surprised by this one (and our families too) since we had to taste it to believe it. I am looking forward to trying many new ice cream recipes this summer. Look out hips......

  13. Great job - I don't have an ice cream maker either (and I also have a tiny, very full freezer), so I skipped this recipe and did a catch up instead. Everyone's photos make me wish I hadn't though - this ice cream looks scrumptious.
